Welcome to Amiga HACK LITE (Plays great - less killing)!
AMIGA HACK is brought to you through the efforts of Home Brew Software, Inc.,
a group committed to producing quality freely redistributable software for
the Amiga. Alan Beale is responsible for this version of Hack Lite. John
Toebes can claim primary responsibility for previous versions of Amiga Hack.
Hack-related inquiries and flames should be directed via US Snail to:
Mage of Yendor
3750 Jamestown Circle
Raleigh, North Carolina 27609
or via E-mail to ponds!squink!biljir@dg-rtp.dg.com.
General inquiries about Home Brew Software, et. al., should be directed to
the address shown in the header at the top of this file.
The latest version of Hack Lite and our other projects are available for
downloading from the Deep Thought bulletin board at (919) 859-5316.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ABOUT HACK +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
This is a version of the public domain program HACK (copyright (c)
Stichting Mathematisch Centrum, Amsterdam, 1984, 1985.) implemented
under AMIGADOS using the SAS/C compiler.
Hack Lite is freely redistributable. You may upload it to public bulletin
boards, or give it to users groups or individuals you feel would enjoy it.
If you plan to distribute Hack, please read the copyright notice at the top
of this file. Basically, the imposing-sounding jargon there is designed to
(hopefully) prevent unscrupulous vermin from making a fast buck selling
Hack as a commercial program, or overcharging for its distribution. Click
on the "Distrib" icon for more information on redistribution of Hack Lite.
We welcome suggestions for improvements and upgrades.
Changes from Hack Lite version 1 (of which there are many) are described at
the end of the Hints.doc file.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ INSTALLING HACK +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Perhaps you have already installed Hack with the HackInstall program before
you got to this file. If you are just browsing the Hack_Install diskette,
please run HackInstall to set everything up. There is help available
within HackInstall. HackInstall doesn't start copying files until you
specifically order it to.
If you are sharing a machine with other potential Hack players, please
click on the "MultiCnfs" icon for information on how to best utilize
HackInstall and HackConfig in this environment.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ HACK CONFIGURATIONS +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
This disk contains two versions of Hack Lite, the full version, and a
limited version which can run on a 512K Amiga. The limited version leaves
out many exciting features, so we do not recommend it unless you are stuck
with only 512K.
HackInstall supports four modes of installation:
Full Hard Disk: All files are copied to your hard disk, and a saved game
directory is created there. This configuration is recommended if you
have the space.
Minimal Hard Disk: The game and related files are copied to your hard disk,
and a floppy is initialized to contain saved games.
Two-floppy Setup: The game and related files are copied to a floppy disk,
and another floppy is initialized as a save disk. This configuration
is recommended if you have two floppy drives. If you have only one
drive, you may need to swap disks as you move from level to level or
save a game. If you have only one drive and must use the limited
version of the game, great patience is required, due to the need to
read game overlays while saves or restores are taking place.
One-floppy Setup: The game and related files are copied to a floppy disk,
and a saved games directory is created there. This configuration
leaves only limited room for saved games. Deletion of files you don't
need (e.g., HackIcon, Workbench icons) will help. We recommend you
install HackConfig in this setup, but delete it after you've configured
your character to your liking. Note that you can still change your
character by editing the HACKLITE.CNF file.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ AUXILIARY PROGRAMS ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
In addition to Hack itself and the installation program, this package
includes several other programs which you may find useful.
The HackConfig program allows you to change your default game options. It
also lets you create and maintain multiple configuration files if several
players use your Amiga, or if you just like having several different HACK
persona. Click on the HackConfig icon to run. Help is available within
the program.
The HackIconIII program lets you revise or replace the Hack Lite graphics
character set. See the HackIconIII.doc file for instructions.
The InstallBeep program, developed by Tim Friest and Don Withey, lets you
replace the Amiga DisplayBeep function, which ordinarily flashes the
screen, with an audible bell (or some other sound of your choice). Many
Hack Lite players prefer to get an audible error indication rather than a
screen flash, which is easy to miss in the excitement. Instructions for
InstallBeep are found in the file InstallBeep.doc.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ DISK CONTENTS ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
A full Hack Lite install creates the following files. Some of these files
can be deleted or moved, while others are necessary for game play. The
following list describes each file and its purpose:
Critical files:
characters.16: The 16-color graphics character set
characters.8: The 8-color graphics character set
characters.alpha: The character mode character set
You need at least one characters.#? file to play the
game!
HackLite2: The game image. Delete it, and you'll never get your
hands on that amulet!
objs: The catalog of Hack Lite objects. Do not delete!
perm: Leave it alone! It's small!
record: The score file. Do not delete!
rumors: Contains fortune cookie messages. Do not delete
(unless you enjoy annoying "Can't open rumors" messages)
Useful files:
data: Useful information about monsters and objects. You need
this file to use the '/' command.
help: Help information.
hh: More help.
ho: Still more help.
news: An introductory screen to Hack Lite, plugging Home Brew
Software. You can delete this if you get tired of seeing
it provided you use the nonews option.
TOMB: The graphical death scene. Do not delete unless you use
the notombstone option.
#?.info: Workbench icons. Delete if you prefer CLI. (Or, just
don't install 'em in the first place!)
Auxiliary programs and files:
bong.beep: A sample sound file for InstallBeep.
HackConfig: A program to change your character's default options or
create new characters.
HackIconIII: A program to redefine the Hack Lite graphics character
set.
InstallBeep: A program to replace the DisplayBeep screen flash with a
noise (e.g., a bell chime).
MyView: This is a "more"-like program which is invoked from the
icons for the documentation files.
PlayBeep: A program run by InstallBeep.
Documentation:
Credits: A full run-down of who to blame^H^H^H^H^Hthank for Hack
Lite and related programs.
Distrib: Legal stuff on redistribution and porting of Hack Lite.
Hack.man: A UNIX(tm)-style man page for Hack Lite.
HackIconIII.doc: Documentation for the HackIconIII program.
Hints.doc: An introduction to Hack Lite, and a discussion of new
features.
HomeBrew: A cheery introduction to Home Brew Software.
InstallBeep.doc: Documentation for the InstallBeep program.
MultiCnfs: A file of helpful information for those who want to
define more than one Hack Lite configuration.
read.me: This file.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ PLAYING HACK +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
To play the game, just click on the Hack Lite icon, or CD to the game
directory and type HackLite2. A UNIX(tm)-style man page for Hack Lite can
be found in Hack.man. Help is available within the game by use of the '?'
command. New players should read the Hints.doc file for an introduction to
the game.
Happy Hacking!
